The WorldSkills International Competition was held.
開かれる is the passive form of 開く (to open / to hold). The past form 開かれました means the event was held. News often uses the passive for events.
「開かれる」是「開く」的被动形,过去形「開かれました」表示活动已经举办。新闻中常用被动形描述活动。
